Central States Orthopedic Specialists First in Tulsa to Offer “Custom” Total Knee Replacement Procedure
Physicians at Central States Orthopedic Specialists (CSOS) are the first group of orthopedic surgeons in Tulsa to offer a “custom” total knee replacement using the Biomet Signature System. The Biomet system begins with a 3-D MRI image of the patient’s knee. State-of-the-art computer software is then used to create personalized cutting guides that indicate exactly where bone cuts should be made so the knee replacement better fits the patient’s unique anatomy and restores the correct alignment of the knee. The guides are unique for each patient and used only once. “While computer guidance has been very successful, this new system represents the next step in an ever-expanding world of improving technology,” said CSOS’ Dr. David E. Nonweiler, who has performed more than 50 of these procedures – including the first procedure in Oklahoma. “This system is revolutionizing the field of joint replacement surgery.” In the past, Nonweiler explained, a surgeon performing a total knee replacement procedure used X-rays to choose the joint replacement component sizes. A variety of instruments were used to verify component sizing and establish proper positioning. Alignment rods were then placed inside the bone during this procedure to aid the process. With the Biomet Signature System, the knee replacement is done more quickly and with less blood loss than a standard knee replacement procedure because the guides do not require the placement of a rod in the bone canal. “Studies indicate that the Biomet procedure’s unique cutting guides improve the fit and alignment of the joint replacement, leading to improved alignment and a longer lasting joint replacement,” he said. Dr. R. Clio Robertson and Dr. Bryan Hawkins of CSOS also perform the Biomet Signature total knee system.
