Unicompartmental Mobile Bearing Knee Systems Performed at Central States Orthopedic Specialists, Inc.

A significant advance in partial knee replacement surgery was recently approved by the FDA and is now available to patients at Central States Orthopedic Specialists, Inc. (CSOS). The Oxford ™ Unicompartmental Mobile Bearing is the only free-floating meniscal unicompartmental knee system approved for sale in the United States.

“What this means to patients is a partial knee replacement that provides more natural functionality and a greatly reduced recovery time,” says Bryan J. Hawkins, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at CSOS. “It allows us to address the dysfunctional part of a patient’s knee and leave the rest intact. It is a much less invasive type of procedure than the fixed bearing surgery that was formerly used.”

Another important feature of the Oxford™ Unicompartmental Mobile Bearing Knee System is that it causes much less wear and tear on the patient’s knee. The Oxford™ Unicompartmental Mobile Bearing Knee System utilizes a compression molded ArCom® polyethylene meniscal bearing, resulting in excellent long-term wear characteristics.

“The Oxford™ Unicompartmental Mobile Bearing Knee System doesn’t experience as much wear because the bearing moves inside the joint,” Dr. Hawkins says. “This eliminates the frictional rubbing and results in excellent long-term wear characteristics. It is an ideal alternative for young patients, as well as older patients who are very active.”

Physicians at CSOS are currently the only ones in Tulsa with the FDA-required training necessary to perform this state-of-the-art procedure. Key benefits of the mobile bearing knee system include a small incision, early patient mobility and more rapid recovery due to the system’s minimally invasive instrumentation and precision surgical technique. Prior to its recent FDA-approval in the U.S., the Oxford™ System has been used in the treatment of over 16,000 cases of medial unicompartmental osteoarthritis annually outside the United States, where its proven long-term clinical results demonstrate a 98 percent success rate at 10 years.

“We’ve been very pleased that this remarkable alternative is now available to patients in the states,” Dr. Hawkins says. “It will certainly make a huge difference in the quality of life and activity levels of patients of all ages.”
